SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The president and CEO of Merit Medical says he will challenge U.S. Sen. Bob Bennett for the Republican nomination this spring.

Fred Lampropoulos unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for governor in 2004.

The 60-year-old joins a crowded field trying to persuade the state's yet-to-be named delegates that Bennett isn't conservative enough.

Three other Republican challengers have already filed to run against Bennett. A fourth, Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, dropped out of the race earlier this month to spend more time with a daughter experiencing mental health problems.

The only Democrat to file for the race is Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control chairman Sam Granato.
