IRON COUNTY -- A truck driver died when he lost control of the semi truck he was driving and plunged down an embankment in Iron County.
The Utah Highway Patrols says the accident happened around 2 p.m. Monday as the semi truck pulling a flatbed trailer loaded with steel coils was westbound on S.R. 14 near Cedar City.
The driver lost control, the truck crossed the center line and ran off the road. The truck and trailer hit a cement barrier, then slid down an embankment for 300 to 400 feet, colliding with trees and rocks.
The driver, whose name was not immediately released, was ejected and died at the scene. The Deseret News reports he was from Alabama.
UHP says it is investigating speed as a possible contributing factor to the wreck but hasn't ruled out mechanical malfunction.
