SANDY -- A fatal crash involving eight cars caused major delays for southbound traffic on I-15 at the south end of the Salt Lake Valley Friday afternoon.

The crash occurred around 1 p.m. at 8500 South. The collision killed a 54-year-old man.

The Utah Highway Patrol said its dispatch center received several calls shortly before the accident from people reporting a reckless driver near 1300 South.

The driver was headed south and is believed to have subsequently caused an accident at 5500 South and an accident at 7800 South.

At 8500 South, the driver crashed into a white Chevrolet. The cars went across all lanes of traffic and hit a concrete barrier, displacing it about 20 feet.

The reckless driver was not wearing his seatbelt. He was taken to Intermountain Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Troopers are not sure why the driver was driving recklessly. They are leaning toward a possible medical problem but have not ruled out other possibilities.

The identity of the man killed has not yet been released. Troopers said they believe he was driving between 80 and 90 miles per hour at the time of the accidents.
