John Daley reporting Police are intensifying efforts on the west side of the Salt Lake Valley, looking for a man who fired shots at a police officer.
For the West Valley City officer the routine nearly turned deadly. The officer spotted a small red car with a child riding in the front seat without his seat belt on.
He went to pull the car over, when the man driving started firing. Witnesses described hearing a number of shots.
Ashley Peterson was driving right next to the red car and says she was stunned to see the whole scene unfold in front of her.
A few blocks away, Kathy and Sam Memmott heard a loud knock and found a bullet hole in the drywall of their home.
By nightfall, police were combing the neighborhood at 4300 S. and 4600 West, near Kennedy Junior High.
Officers with search dogs from a number of nearby police agencies pitched in and soon stopped a pair of men--one who fit the description--but let them go when they realized they had the wrong man.
West Valley Police believe the suspect may have stolen the car in Salt Lake yesterday.
Meantime, they're relieved his shots missed and the officer wasn't hurt.
West Valley Police have a brief description of the suspect.
They say he is roughly 5 foot 8 inches, 190 pounds. White or hispanic.
In the car with him were a nine or ten year-old boy, a pit bull, and police believe a female passenger was also with him.
That's not a lot to go on. Police are still searching,hoping they can track down this suspect as soon as possible.
