MIDVALE — A man was arrested early Monday after police say he broke into his ex-wife's residence in Midvale and attacking three people.

Jose Leonardo Chirinos Perez, 35, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of three counts of aggravated assault resulting in serious injury and three counts of domestic violence in the presence of a child. As of Monday, a second man, 32, who was also detained by police, had not been formally booked into jail.

Just after 3:30 a.m., Unified police say Perez — armed with a tire iron and a knife — went to an apartment near 700 West and 7000 South where his ex-wife, his three children, and his ex-wife's new boyfriend were all staying, and "in a fit of rage" broke in and attacked three people, according to a police booking affidavit. All three people required medical attention.

"The victims' injuries included multiple lacerations to the head," the affidavit states.

In the initial call to 911, it was reported that children could be heard screaming. When police arrived, they found three victims — two adults and one child. All three were taken to a local hospital. The injuries to the child are minor, police said. Conditions on the two adults were not available Monday afternoon.

Perez and the second man had left the apartment by the time police arrived, but they were found a short distance away, according to the affidavit.
