COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS -- Students at Brighton High School have received praise from a far away nation for their fundraising efforts.

Peter Ogego, the Kenyan Ambassador to the United States, made a personal visit to the school at 2220 Bengal Blvd. (7600 South) Thursday to thank students for their efforts.

The Brighton Bengals have set a goal of raising $48,000 by Christmas to build four dams in Kenya. They've raised more than $20,000 already.

The school plans to raise more funds through hot chocolate and churro sales, a boutique, sweatshirt sales and a Ping-Pong tournament.

The funds will provide water supplies to 50,000 Kenyans.

As is tradition, the student-leadership group earlier this year selected a charity to which students would contribute money earned through various activities. Students chose the Utah-based, nonprofit group In Our Quiet Way, along with its Give a Dam project.
