SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The Senate has given its OK to a measure that would ban smoking in cars when young children are present.
Senate Bill 43 passed yesterday with a 20-to-7 vote. The bill --- which is sponsored by Senator Scott McCoy --- would make it a secondary infraction to light up in private vehicles when a child younger than 5 is also in the car. lighting up in a private vehicles when a child under the age of 5 is also in the car.
Under the law --- violators would receive a $45 fine, which could be suspended upon proof of enrolling in a smoking cessation program.
The measure now moves on to the full House for debate.
