THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA

By Lauren Weisberger

Delicious. This book is absolutely delicious. It’s not the most original work I’ve ever read, reminding me a lot of The Nanny Diaries and I Don’t Know How She Does It, but enjoyable nonetheless for the same reasons its predecessors were enjoyable. It’s delicious to dish. It’s not socially redeeming or spiritually uplifting or even intellectually stimulating – but it’s tasty!

The Devil Wears Prada is the story of the mother of all nightmare bosses. Andrea Sachs works for the wicked witch of the fashion world, Miranda Priestly, editor of Runway magazine. Miranda screams, ignores, dictates, overlooks, chides, belittles and manipulates her assistant within an inch of her life. She demands that her Atkins Diet breakfast of undercooked bacon and sausage and coffee be piping hot when she arrives every morning, but she refuses to inform Andrea of when that might be. Being unable to consult a psychic on when the perfect time to order the breakfast will be, Andrea orders the breakfast over and over again, every 15 minutes, so that no matter when Miranda arrives – it’s hot! Is that delicious, or what?

The author actually did work for the notorious editor of Vogue after graduating from Cornell. What good material that experience provided her! The anecdotes of models and former models and model-wannabes prancing around the magazine, sneering at anyone who actually lowers themselves to eat at lunch and complaining that they’re too fat for their size 1’s is too funny.

On the Bestseller List for ten weeks now, Lauren Weisberger’s unoriginal but entertaining hit is getting a lot of buzz. A movie deal is already in the works. On the Book Beat for KSL Newsradio 1160, I’m Amanda Dickson.
