(Logan-AP) -- Former Air Force Academy athletic director Randall Spetman is Utah State's new athletic director.

The university made the announcement today.

Spetman will begin at Utah State July 1. He replaces Rance Pugmire, who resigned in April after pleading guilty to alcohol-related reckless driving.

Spetman oversaw 27 sports at Air Force and hired former basketball coach Joe Scott, who led the Falcons to the Mountain West Conference regular-season title and the Academy's first NCAA tournament berth in 42 years.

Spetman announced his retirement from the Academy in October after a change in the chain of command was implemented following a sexual assault scandal involving cadets.

The retired colonel was athletic director at Air Force since 1996.
