Michael Steele, 50, is the current Republican National Committee Chairman; elected in January 2009. He is the first African American to chair the Republican National Committee and the second to chair either major U.S. party's National Committee. He served as Lieutenant Governor of Maryland from 2003 to 2007, unsuccessfully running for Senator in 2006. Steele served as chairman of GOPAC, a republican training organization and worked as a partner at a private law firm before becoming chairman of the RNC.
