VERNAL, Utah (AP) -- Fire investigators are trying to figure out this morning what exactly caused a house fire in Vernal that killed an elderly man.

The fire started yesterday. That's when crews were called to the home, which was fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters say neighbors quickly alerted them the homeowner may still be inside. Crews crawled through a window and found him in bed. The man --- whose name has NOT yet been released --- was rushed to the hospital and later pronounced dead.

A house cat also died in the fire. So far, an exact cause of the fire is unknown. However, investigators believe a wood burning stove in the attic may have started it.
