SALT LAKE CITY -- A major construction project has shut down part of Interstate 15. Just before 10 p.m. Saturday crews shut both directions of I-15 between I-215 and I-80 so they can tear down the bridge at 800 North.
Ogden resident Bob Unguren said, "It's hard. It will be a pain. It's really the only way to get home."
Crews should finish demolishing the bridge and reopen the interstate by 10 p.m. Sunday. UDOT will build a new bridge at 1000 North. It should be completed by next spring.
There are some easy alternate routes for Sunday:
- If you are heading north, take I-80 West to I-215 North and rejoin I-15 at the north interchange.
- If you are going south, take I-215 to I-80 and connect to I-15 Southbound.
- Legacy Highway is also an option.
UDOT spokesman Adan Carrillo advised drivers to "obey the speed limit, be safe out there, plan ahead." UDOT says the temporary inconvenience is necessary for Utah's growing population. The new, wider bridges will accommodate Express Lanes on the interstate.
Crews will build the bridge off site then move it into place with machinery.
"By doing these bridges with this technology it allows us to cut about a year in construction time," Carrillo said.
Crews also will close the southbound off-ramp at 600 North for the next two months to widen it.
