SALT LAKE COUNTY -- Summer may be over, but road construction is still in full swing. The Utah Department of Transportation has two major construction projects under way this weekend: one at the north end of Salt Lake County, and another at the south end.

The first project started Friday night at 10 p.m. near 10600 South--Interstate 15 is down to just two lanes for southbound drivers. But the biggest project this weekend involves the bridge over I-15 at 800 North. UDOT is tearing it down, and that requires a 24-hour freeway closure beginning Saturday night at 10:00.

The 800 North bridge over I-15 will be demolished this weekend

"We're doing it this way because we will be able to demolish this bridge in just 24 hours and have the freeway back open by Monday morning. In fact, by Sunday night it will be reopened so people won't notice any major changes--except that the 800 North bridge will not be there Monday morning," said UDOT spokesman Adan Carrillo.

There are some easy alternate routes for Sunday:

  • If you are heading north, take I-80 West to I-215 North and rejoin I-15 at the north interchange.
  • If you are going south, take I-215 to I-80 and connect to I-15 Southbound.
  • Legacy Highway is also an option.

UDOT will build a new bridge at 1000 North, which should be finished next year, but the work will require the southbound exit from I-15 at 600 North to be closed for the next two months.

At the south end of the valley, UDOT's ongoing project to build an interchange at 11400 South requires crews to do some paving this weekend, and that means lane restrictions. From Friday night at 10:00 until 10 a.m. Saturday, then again Saturday night from 10:00 until 5 a.m. Monday, only two southbound lanes will be open to traffic from 10000 South to 12300 South.

This weekend isn't the end of freeway closures for the season. Next weekend, new bridges over I-15 in American Fork will be installed. And in two weeks, I-15 will be closed for a new bridge at Beck Street in North Salt Lake.
