PROVO -- BYU sophomore receiver Mckay Jacobson will miss four to six weeks with a hamstring injury, head coach Bronco Mendenhall announced Monday.
Jacobson suffered the injury during warm-ups before Friday night's 35-17 win over Utah State. The injury caused him to miss the game against the Aggies.
According to Mendenhall, team trainer Kevin Morris told him the injury was "pretty rare" to happen during stretching.
It was originally thought to be just hamstring tightness but an MRI revealed a hamstring pull, which Mendenhall said was, "way, way up high, at the origin of the muscle."
With Jacobson out, Luke Ashworth will start in his place at wide receiver. Fellow sophomore receiver O'Neill Chambers becomes the new No. 1 punt returner while running back J.J. DiLuigi will replace Jacobson on kickoff returns.
The loss of Jacobson is significant, but the team believes others will be able to step up in his absence.
"Any injury to a player like McKay is going to impact the team," said sophomore tackle Matt Reynolds. "But we've got some great players in our depth chart. You know, Luke (Ashworth) has had an awesome game. Where we'll miss (Jacobsen), we'll still be able to keep going like we have been."
