CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP) -- Attorneys for a man charged with a double-murder in southern Utah are seeking brain imaging tests to assess his mental capabilities.
Martin Chris Nelson is charged with murder in the deaths of Derek Davis and Chad Grijalva, both of St. George. Davis and Grijalva, both 34, were shot eight times in the torso and head and were found buried in a shallow grave on Nelson's property.
Nelson is scheduled for a 5th District Court trial Nov. 30.
At a hearing Monday, Judge G. Michael Westfall approved a PET scan and an MRI.
St. George physician Timothy Kockler requested the scans. Kockler is working for the defense and says Nelson has been exposed to neurotoxins and has a history of head injuries.
He says the scans will bring clarity to Nelson's diagnostic picture.
