OGDEN -- Running back Trevyn Smith and quarterback Cameron Higgins tormented the Idaho State Bengals, something they've done throughout their careers, en route to a 44-17 beat down at Stewart Stadium on Saturday night in Ogden.
The Weber State Wildcats have now won 23 of their last 25 against the rival Bengals, but it didn't come easily and without some key injuries.
The Bengals came out and stunned the Wildcats on the opening drive marching down the field 80 yards and scoring on their first drive to take a 7-0 lead. Weber State responded with a touchdown of their own knotting the score at 7-7. Idaho State then marched down the field once again on an 84 yard drive to take the lead back at 14-7 and that was the score as the first quarter ended.
Wildcat Safety Beau Hadley picked off ISU Quarterback Kyle Blum at the beginning of the second quarter, which led to a Tim Toone touchdown reception tying the game at 14 a piece. The Wildcats went into the locker room at halftime leading 24-14, but had some costly injuries in that second quarter.
Weber State defensive End Kevin Linehan went down with a separated shoulder and was in street clothes the rest of the game. Head Athletic Trainer Joel Bass said Linehan should be able to play next weekend against Portland State, so good news for the Wildcats there. The not so good news is on tight end Cody Nakamura. Nakamura went down in the second with a sprained knee. Coach Ron McBride said that when he talked to the trainers they were saying it wasn't good, but they will have a more definitive answer come Monday.
The second half of the game saw Weber State dominate on both sides of the ball. The Wildcat offense led by Higgins and Smith shredded the Bengal defense. Higgins finished with 265 yards passing and three touchdowns, completing 25 of 31 passes. Smith carried the ball 28 times and racked up 177 yards, with two touchdowns, giving him a total of 588 career rushing yards and 10 touchdowns in four games against Idaho State.
The Wildcat defense held ISU to only three points the entire second half, causing three turnovers for the game. Senior Beau Hadley, who had an interception in the game, and hard hitting junior middle linebacker Taylor Sedillo were all over the place on the field causing havoc for the Bengal offense all night long.
Next up for the Wildcats is a visit on Saturday, Sept. 26 to the City of Roses to take on the Vikings of Portland State. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
