CEDAR HILLS, Utah (AP) -- Cedar Hills residents will be able to buy alcohol after the city council nixed an ordinance that would have banned beer sales.
Last night, The council voted 3 to 2 in favor of future beer sales.
The council's action paves the way for a Smith's supermarket to be the anchor store on 18 acres slated for development.
If the council had outlawed beer, Smith's could have voided its contract with the developer and located elsewhere.
Some residents said the city, which has almost no commercial tax base, could not afford to pass up the tax revenues a Smith's would generate.
However, opponents said the city would be selling out its high standards by allowing alcohol sales.
If a Smith's does come to Cedar Hills, residents will no longer have to drive to Highland, American Fork and Pleasant Grove to buy groceries.
