(KSL News) For the first time since he's taken office five years ago, Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson is proposing to raise taxes.

KSL Newsradio reports the mayor is requesting $1.4 million to pay for more police and department personnel. If approved, this would be the third straight year Salt Lake residents see a tax increase.

Anderson will present his proposal to the city council tonight.

Councilman Carlton Christensen tells KSL Newsradio a tax increase should be the last option. Salt Lake City already has the highest property tax rates of any city along the Wasatch Front.
