(KSL News) -- A driver took his eyes off the road for just a moment, and now he's in the hospital in critical condition.

Salt Lake police say the 37-year-old was driving through a quiet neighborhood last night.

As he reached down to grab something, he looked away from the road, and plowed into a parked van.

Investigators don't think the driver was drinking, doing drugs, or even speeding.

Teri Sommers, Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office: "Reaching for cell phones, reaching for CDs, those kinds of thing create those kind of problems and drivers become distracted. You know the hand on the steering wheel wavers or pushes the steering wheel off in a different direction."

Authorities say he suffered serious head injuries, probably from hitting the steering wheel. He was flown to the hospital in critical condition.
