OREM, Utah (AP) -- The designated driver behind the wheel of a car stopped in Orem was the sober one in the vehicle but he was only 14 years old.
Police said the Orem boy's mother and two men had been drinking in Heber City Sunday afternoon, and when it was time to go home, none of the adults was in a condition to drive.
So they decided to have the woman's son drive them back to Orem.
They made it down the canyon safely, but were stopped by Orem police Sergeant Gary Giles for a traffic violation.
He confiscated the alcohol the adults were still drinking and cited them for open container violations.
When Giles told the mother she also was going to be cited for allowing her son to drive the car, she said letting him drive had been the most responsible option they had under the circumstances.
