SALT LAKE CITY -- An alert neighbor is being credited for helping police find three suspected robbers.

A man was watering his lawn in the 1600 South block of Stewart Street around 1 p.m. Thursday when he saw a car he didn't recognize pull up to his neighbor's home.

Lara Jones of the Salt Lake City Police Department said, "One of the female suspects was knocking the door and the male suspect was around back."

The homeowner ignored the knock at the door but heard a window breaking. When she ran out of the house, her neighbor stepped in, chasing the male suspect who had a jewelry box.

"The witness was able to get the jewelry box back, and I believe that was the only item taken from the house," Jones said.

The witness and the victim gave police a description of the getaway car, which officers spotted later.

They arrested 31-year-old Bessy Skorupski and 50-year-old Donald Williams, and the suspected getaway driver, 31-year-old Lisa Williams. The trio was booked into jail for second-degree burglary.

Police don't usually recommend that residents chase criminal suspects.
