Randall Jeppesen Reporting A large number of wrecks in Big Cottonwood Canyon over the past couple of weeks has some asking if anything can be done to make the canyon drive safer.
During the day the sun reaches the road, and when combined with salt you get a watery melt. Once the sun goes down the water quickly turns to ice.
Nile Easton, Utah Department of Transportation: "It's also people with four-wheel drive who, I think, have a false sense of security."
He says they have been working on the canyon and they plan to spend an additional seven-hundred thousand dollars in safety improvements in 2007. Some of these improvements include widening shoulders and adding guardrails.
Nile Easton: "People still blast through guardrails or that causes injuries themselves, so that is not the cure-all."
They can't put guardrails everywhere because they block the snowplows from clearing the road.
