CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP) -- A 17-year-old boy went smokeless trying to buy cigarettes from clerks at 60 convenience stores in an undercover sales compliance check conducted by police.
He didn't even get a pack of matches.
Cedar City police Sgt. Darin Adams says he can't remember the last time he saw 100 percent compliance.
Police make quarterly sales compliance checks in conjunction with the Southwest Utah Public Health Department. The last check was made Thursday.
Each clerk asked the teenage boy for identification and refused him when he couldn't prove his age. The boy wore an audio transmission device so police could listen in.
Adams says in the last sales sting, four of five clerks made sales to underage buyers. Each was charged with unlawful tobacco supply to a minor. Some were also fired.
