WEST VALLEY CITY -- Police are investigating a body found floating in the Jordan River.

A group of people on the Jordan River Parkway Trail made the discovery Wednesday night, spotting it about 10 feet from the shore, tangled in a clump of trees, said West Valley City police Capt. Tom McLachlan.

"The body has been in the water for a long time, at least a month, possibly longer than that," he told KSL NewsRadio on Thursday. "The body was very badly decomposed, skeletonized in certain sections."

McLachlan said unfortunately, they cannot even tell the gender of the person. It is an average-sized body and was clothed. No identification was found, he said.

Police hope an autopsy scheduled late Thursday will help lead to identification. There were no obvious signs of foul play, he said.
