SOUTH SALT LAKE -- A South Salt Lake man is accused of starting his apartment on fire.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports the man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of arson.

On Monday, flames and smoke were reported coming out of an apartment building near 300 East and Helm Avenue. Several people were forced to evacuate while firefighters battled the blaze.

South Salt Lake Fire Chief Steve Foote told the newspaper that witnesses reported the man was upset after he saw a late-rent notice posted on his door.

Investigators have not confirmed the actual motive for the fire.

The fire caused over $100,000 in damage, and several of the apartments are inhabitable.
