Tomorrow, Americans celebrate yet another national birthday - the 233 anniversary of the establishment of the United States of America.
This year's Independence Day comes in the midst of economic upheaval throughout the world, ongoing wars and threats of more war in foreign lands, and an intense national debate over the structure of our economic system. Clearly, it is not an easy time for this nation that was conceived in liberty, and dedicated to principles of human equality and freedom.
Yet, to look around at what is happening in other lands offers affirmation that the principles upon which this nation was founded remain the prototype for human development and happiness.
Where despots rule inconceivable human suffering typically results.
Where the inherent rights of human interaction are withheld collective and personal progress is limited.
Where freedom is suppressed, the longing to have it usually simmers below the surface.
Examples abound, most noticeably in recent months with what has been happening on the continent of Africa, in North Korea, and, of course, with the massive demonstrations in Iran.
