SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon says he is vetoing a $5 million property tax increase approved by the County Council last month.
Earlier this week Corroon presented an alternate budget strategy to the council that he says addresses a 2010 budget shortfall without increasing property taxes. The council didn't adopt the mayor's proposal.
The five Democrats on the council say a tax increase is needed to fix the county budget. The tax increase would add $10 a year to the taxes on a $250,000 home.
To overturn Corroon's veto, the Democrats must find a sixth vote among council Republicans. Council Chairman Joe Hatch says he has scheduled a veto override vote at the next council meeting on July 14.
Thursday's action marked Corroon's first veto.
