(KSL News) A word of warning this morning, especially with these extremely cold temperatures.

Capt. Bob Kladianos, Unified Fire Authority: "Be careful with your space heaters. Be careful with your fireplaces, Watch how you dispose of your ashes. Check your smoke detectors. Check your carbon monoxide detectors."

This after a family woke up to smoke in their basement at about 5900 South 4000 West.

An electrical space heater had tipped over and caught the carpet, then a curtain, on fire.

Damage was minimal, but this family was lucky. It could have been much worse.

If you don't have any smoke detectors, Unified Fire says they will come out and install them in your house for you.
