Press releasePROVO -- BYU head football coach Bronco Mendenhall announced Thursday that junior defensive lineman Bernard Afutiti has been ruled academically ineligible to compete during the 2009 season.

"Bernard has been ruled academically ineligible to play this coming season," Mendenhall said. "He will remain in school and work on becoming eligible to compete again as a senior in the 2010 season."

The 6-foot-1, 262-pound defensive lineman sat out last season at BYU as a redshirt after transferring from Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif.
