BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- Koby Karl scored 18 points and Boise State snapped a two-game losing streak Wednesday night, building a big lead, then holding off a furious BYU rally to win 72-68.
With BYU trailing 70-68, Boise State's Eric Lane stole the ball and raced the length of the floor before being fouled attempting a layup. He hit both free throws with 8.6 seconds left to give the Broncos (2-3) their final margin.
Jimmy Balderson scored 15 points for BYU (3-2), which saw a three-game winning streak end.
Matt Nelson scored 15 points for Boise State. Austin Ainge and Keena Young each had 14 for BYU.
The Broncos shot 48 percent from the field compared to BYU's 43 percent. The Broncos hit eight of 20 3-pointers, while BYU hit 11-of-21 of its 3-point attempts, most in the second half to fuel the rally.
Karl hit a 3-pointer and then two free throws near the end of the first half as part of a 17-8 run that broke open the game for the Broncos.
Boise State led by as many as 24 points early in the second half but saw BYU close to 65-61 with 2:14 left after Ainge hit three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point shot.
Ainge, the son of former NBA player and coach Danny Ainge, hit three 3-pointers in the final eight minutes.
Karl, the son of Denver Nuggets coach George Karl, went cold in the second half and missed two free throws and a 3-point attempt in the final minutes.
Balderson and Lee Cummard hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Cougars a 12-11 lead with 13:55 left in the first half.
But Karl hit a 3-pointer and then put back his own miss and the Broncos began to steadily pull away to take a 40-25 lead at halftime.
The Broncos opened the second half with a seven-point run after Reggie Larry put back his own miss, Karl completed a 3-point play after getting fouled on a layup and Tyler Tiedeman dunked after a Bronco steal.
