Alex Cabrero ReportingIt seems someone thought this past Thanksgiving weekend would be a good time to break into two empty Logan elementary schools.
Adams elementary and Wilson elementary, both on the East side of town, were invaded by intruders, and Stuart Howell, with the Logan School District, isn't happy at all.
Stuart Howell, Logan School District: "Anytime someone takes something we do have, they're depriving our young people of an opportunity to learn."
That was the case in Provo as well. Thieves stole sewing machines, computers, and a projector from Centennial Middle School.
Mitch Swenson, Principal at Centennial Middle School: "It's unfortunate how it impacts students. The laptops missing from our portable lab are for our Special Ed students."
That school has a security camera with the thieves on tape, which could help police. The two elementary schools in Logan did not.
Capt. Eric Collins of the Logan Police Department: "Any kind of security system, whether it be cameras or an alarm system would help us tremendously. We're in discussions with the school district about getting them more secure."
Police don't believe these break-ins could have been prevented, but maybe they could have caught whoever was breaking in if the school district would have invested more money in security.
The school district says it's definitely interested in boosting security measures.
Stuart Howell, Logan School District: "That will happen, and we can buy them really inexpensively, but because these happen so infrequently, we chose not to do anything. But, because of the latest incidents, we're going to install."
No suspects have yet been caught in either the Logan or Provo thefts.
It's hard to say if the long Thanksgiving weekend was the reason why the thefts happened, but police feel anytime a building is empty for a long period of time... thieves notice.
