DAVIS COUNTY -- The next time an emergency forces residents from their homes in Davis County, they should be able to make quick arrangements for their pets.
The Standard-Examiner reports Davis County Animal Control & Services has added a 24-foot trailer, complete with kennels, food and water, even air conditioning. It can hold up to 48 dogs or cats who are out of their homes due to an emergency.
What to do with animals during disasters was brought to light after Hurricane Katrina. It's also the focus of a recent documentary film, "MINE."
The trailer cost almost $47,000 and was purchased with a Federal Emergency Management Agency Grant. It can be used during emergencies involving pets in Davis, Weber, Morgan, Box Elder and Cache counties.
Emergency planners say it's about more than helping pets. It may be enough to convince some otherwise hesitant homeowners to leave in an evacuation.
The Standard-Examiner also reports the trailer will be used in non-emergency situations at county fairs, safety fairs and at pet adoption sites.
