SALT LAKE CITY -- A Flame of Hope is on the last leg of a statewide journey for Utah's Special Olympics.
A Special Olympics athlete and Salt Lake City's police chief lit the torch for its final run Wednesday morning at the State Capitol. Community members, athletes, members of the media and law enforcement officers have kept the flame alive for 1,600 miles.
"We are honored and privileged to be the official guardians of the Flame of Hope. During the past month, law enforcement officers throughout the state have been running the torch in their local communities to not only raise money, but raise awareness to the Special Olympics," said Salt Lake City Police Chief Chris Burbank.
The torch arrives in Provo Thursday night at 7:00 for the Opening Ceremonies at the Larry H. Miller and Gail Miller Baseball Complex.
