CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP) -- Authorities are investigating the death of an Iron County jail inmate.
Brad J. Long, 22, of Cedar City, was found unconscious in his cell by corrections officers just before 6 p.m. Thursday, the county sheriff's office said in a statement. Long was taken to Valley View Medical Center in Cedar City, where he was pronounced dead.
Prior to being taken to the hospital, jail nurses administered CPR and used a defibrillator in an attempt to revive Long, the sheriff's office said.
An autopsy will be conducted by the state medical examiner. The death is being investigated by the Cedar City police department.
It is believed Long committed suicide by hanging himself in the cell, the sheriff's office said.
Iron County Sheriff Mark Gower said deputies make frequent checks on inmates. He declined to say how much time had passed between the last check and the discovery of Long.
It is the first time in more than 10 years a death has occurred inside the jail, Gower said.
Long had been arrested 15 hours earlier and was being held for investigation of assault by a prisoner, driving under the influence, and driving on a revoked or suspended license.
