SALT LAKE CITY -- The EPA hosted its first-ever "Bed Bug Summit," saying the tiny insect is coming back in big numbers across the country. Along with other states, Utah is also seeing more complaints of bed bugs.
"When I was working in the ‘80s, I never saw any bed bugs. But I would hear other people in the office talk about them maybe once or twice every year or two," said Diane Keay, with the Salt Lake Valley Health Department.
Now, Keay says she and 13 other workers get at least one call a week. There are a few theories as to why. "They seem to be resistant to a lot of the traditional sprays that we have used in the past," Keay said.
Also, we're not using one-size-fits-all bug sprays like we used to. One of the best ways to get rid of them is vacuuming.
