Samantha Hayes Reporting It was a bitter sweet morning for several Utah families and a group of orphans. The orphans, visiting from Ukraine, stayed in Utah for nearly two weeks, and during that time grew close to their foster families.
It was hard for the Reynolds family to say goodbye to seven-year old Olena this morning as she heads back to Ukraine with 24 other orphans. We were there when they met each other almost two weeks ago at the airport, where they felt a special connection instantly.
Sometimes- it just feels right.
Michelle Reynolds, Foster Parent: "I can't explain it, it's the most wonderful, amazing feeling. No words to explain it."
Michelle Reynolds and her family did not know what to expect when they invited seven-year old Olena into their home. Now, as Michelle straightens up the bedroom where Olena stayed, it's hard to imagine home without her.
Michelle Reynolds: "There is an emptiness here, silence driving the car."
For twelve days they lived like a normal family- Olena carved pumpkins, dressed up like a princess for Halloween, and grew close to Michelle's other children and her husband, who Olena now calls "papa."
Michelle Reynolds: "She says, 'I love you mama. I love you mama.' Then, 'I love you papa.'"
The orphans arrived in Salt Lake City through the "Save a Child Foundation", started by a Utah couple. Many are adopted after their stay with local foster families, and it looks like the Reynolds are seriously considering that.
Michelle Reynolds: "Hopefully we can get her. We just pray we do. We want her in our home so desperately. WE haven't had any problems, none whatsoever. She's supposed to be here I think."
It can take more than a year for an adoption and the Reynolds family, by law, must also be willing to adopt any sisters and brothers of Olena. It's an enormous commitment but one they are considering seriously.
