PROVO, Utah (AP) -- A Payson city councilman -- once charged with misdemeanor simple assault in a confrontation with two men who were allegedly putting graffiti on his pickup truck -- has pleaded no contest to a lesser charge.

Scott Phillips entered his plea in abeyance to a disorderly conduct infraction on Thursday and paid $100. If he steers clear of trouble for six months, the charge will be dismissed.

Prosecutors last summer said Phillips grabbed two men, ages 18 and 19, by the back of the neck when he caught them spray painting his truck.

Phillips was initially charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct and simple assault. The two teens were charged with misdemeanor graffiti violations.
