LAYTON -- We have a warning for students trying to get into college: Beware of a telephone call promising help on the ACT.

Parents were getting phone calls from a company saying they were calling on behalf of Layton High School, offering help on the ACT in exchange for some credit information.

Layton High Assistant Principal John Gochberg says these calls are not from the school. "Anyone who's calling a home and asking for a credit card number, that's a big red flag," he said.

Gochberg checked out the company. It appears to be called Scholarship Fund America, based in California.

"When I tried to contact them, the phone number was disconnected," he said.

Gochberg says a link shows the Better Business Bureau is investigating. He sent an e-mail to parents warning them this sounds like a scam. He said, "We knew this was trouble for our parents and our kids."

Gochberg says the school was contacted by three parents concerned about the phone calls from the company, which means there could be a dozen or so other parents who were affected as well.

Gochberg has referred this matter to the Utah Attorney General's Office.
