Sam Penrod ReportingThe former mayor of Eagle Mountain finds himself facing criminal charges today. Brian Olsen resigned as the mayor on Friday and today prosecutors filed felony charges against him.
Olsen resigned from office on Friday afternoon, citing 'personal and family reasons'. However, rumors began to fly that he was under investigation on criminal charges, and today those rumors proved true, as the Utah County attorney's office filed seven separate felony charges, accusing Olsen of misusing public funds.
The charges were filed after an investigation was launched when several city employees complained to prosecutors. Brian Olsen was elected mayor of Eagle Mountain almost a year ago, but in less than a year, he was the subject of criticism.
First it was discovered that Olsen misled voters about his qualifications, claiming he held a Master's degree in public administration, which he did not. Then last month, he and city council began feuding, and at one point Olsen ordered all city council members have their city-owned laptop computers scanned for possible pornography.
Now Olsen is out of office and a temporary mayor is filling the position until a new mayor can be selected.
