SALT LAKE CITY -- The Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office has filed one count of murder against Matthew James Day.

Investigators say Day shot and killed Cesar Ramirez while traveling on Interstate 15 following an altercation on Jan. 9.

It started near 900 South and West Temple. Investigators say gang signs were exchanged between the Day and Ramirez.

The altercation continued onto the freeway and ended on the collector near 1700 South when 18-year-old Ramirez was shot.

Jail documents say Day chased the victim's car, cut off another driver, then drove next to Ramirez and opened fire.

Ramirez died several days after the shooting.

Day was arrested in February in a Provo motel room.

If convicted, Day faces a prison sentence of 15 years to life in prison.
