BRIGHAM CITY, Utah (AP) -- Inmates at the Box Elder County jail are now being charged $10 a day for their incarceration.
In June 2008 county officials said they planned to charge $45 a day, but dropped the price following concerns that not everyone would be able to afford the cost.
Box Elder County sheriff's Sgt. Marvin Miller says the Pay for Stay program applies to county inmates, not state prisoners and inmates or those on work release.
The program started on Sunday.
Cache, Davis and Weber counties use a similar program. Cache County charges $45 a day and Weber and Davis counties charge $10.
Opponents of the program say it will be counterproductive and that giving people a bill will encourage them to return to crime to pay their debt.
