The brouhaha over recent intemperate remarks by Senator Chris Buttars is more than a distraction, as some of his colleagues contend. It is nothing less than an embarrassment for the man, the institution he represents and the state where he lives.

The senator's myopic generalizations about the moral character of others underscored by his loose-tongued candor in expressing those views, reflects an unfortunate lack of judgment on his part. The fact he came under fire a year ago for other bigoted comments suggests he didn't learn much the first time around.

KSL certainly shares the senator's concerns about the institution of marriage. We fully support reasoned efforts to preserve marriage as a legal union between a man and a woman.

The verbal jousting in the marriage debate, of course, is not one-sided. Harsh, strident voices have been heard coming from those who support alternatives to traditional marriage. Society would be the better if they, as well as those, like Senator Buttars, who are concerned about the gay agenda, would tone down the rhetoric and strive more diligently to understand what each side is actually saying.

Better to approach such divisive issues with reason and civility, than to fuel the flames of intolerance with unbridled tongues.
