Ridership on the FrontRunner commuter train has started to decline.

The Utah Transit Authority released eight months of ridership figures, from May to December of last year. After hitting a high in August with an average of 8,700 riders a day, numbers started falling. The figures reached a low of 5,311 in December. UTA originally projected an average daily ridership of 5,900.

UTA says there are two reasons FrontRunner numbers are down: gas prices are lower over the same time period and Legacy Parkway has been an enticing option for commuters since it opened in September. UTA expects FrontRunner ridership numbers to recover somewhat this spring when fares drop.

UTA spokeswoman Carrie Bohnsack-Ware says FrontRunner numbers still are strong, even if they've dropped a little bit. She says overall ridership on all UTA services is up 2 percent from a year ago.
