SPRINGDALE, Washington County — One of Utah's most iconic hikes is expected to reopen before this weekend after a safety issue led to its abrupt closure on Wednesday.
Zion National Park closed the final half-mile of the Angels Landing hike on Wednesday for emergency repairs of a safety chain post, park officials told KSL in a statement. Officials didn't disclose what happened to the post, but the chain section of the trail helps hikers climb the steep, narrow terrain near the trail's famed peak.
Park officials initially posted online that the trail would be closed indefinitely, but it is expected to open on Friday.
"Park maintenance was able to evaluate the damage, and repairs will be complete by (Friday) morning," a spokesperson told KSL, adding that the trail will reopen for permitted hikes in that section once it's ready.
Zion instituted a permit lottery in 2022 to improve safety on the popular trail. The day-before lottery was reopened on Thursday, as crews worked on the repairs.
