(Press Release)LARAMIE, Wyo. -- The University of Utah men's basketball team (15-7, 6-2 MWC) will go for its second straight road victory Saturday, taking on Wyoming (14-8, 3-5 MWC) at 2 p.m. MT. With a win, the Utes will stay atop the Mountain West Conference standings.
Utah is coming off a 62-54 victory at TCU on Wednesday, fighting back from a five-point halftime deficit. The surge was lead by sophomore guard Carlon Brown (Riverside, Calif.), who posted his second career double-double with 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.
Wyoming is coming off of two straight road losses, falling at BYU, 84-60, then losing 86-57 at New Mexico. The Cowboys are hoping for a welcome return home, where they are unbeaten this season with a 10-0 record and have won 11 straight going back to last season. In the league this year, Wyoming is 3-0, while going 0-5 away from its home floor. Utah is currently 6-5 away from home, including a 4-5 mark in true road games and a 2-0 record in neutral site contests.
The Utes are led by 7-2 senior center Luke Nevill (Perth, Australia), who is making a strong case for All-American and MWC Player of the Year honors. He is also the reigning MWC Co-Player of the Week, sharing the honor with Lorenzo Wade of San Diego State. Nevill leads the Utes with 17.4 points per game to go with 8.2 rebounds and 2.59 blocks.
Wyoming senior guard Brandon Ewing is leading the Cowboys and is just ahead of Nevill for the conference scoring lead with 18.0 points per game. Their leading rebounder is senior forward Tyson Johnson, who trails Nevill for the league lead with 8.0 boards per contest.
Utah holds a 91-73 advantage in the all-time series against the Cowboys, including last month's 91-67 victory in the conference-opener in Salt Lake. The Utes have had some trouble in the past in Laramie, posting a 31-48 mark on Wyoming's home floor. Utah has lost two straight at Arena-Auditorium, with their last win coming Feb. 1, 2006, by a 71-63 margin. Utah lost last year's meeting at Wyoming, 72-64.
