Alex Cabrero reporting This week, the Wayne High School baseball team is competing in the state playoffs. Many of the spectators at the games will see something they've never seen before.
It's the last practice of the year before Wayne High School plays in the state tournament.
Scott Ellett, Baseball Coach: "We can compete with anybody."
Trevor Taylor, Centerfielder: "It'll be a dream come true."
It's already been quite a dream, especially for one player who just stands out.
Trevor Taylor, Centerfielder: "Everyday at practice, he's the first one here, probably a half hour before anyone else."
He is Porter Ellett, a junior 1st baseman and pitcher.
Scott Ellett, Baseball Coach: "He's one of nine starters, but he makes the other players better."
And he does it all with one arm.
Porter Ellett, 1st Baseman / Pitcher: "I catch it, and then I flip the ball up, and drop my mitt. As I drop my mitt, I turn sideways so I'm ready to throw it, and I catch the ball and throw."
His technique is flawless, and necessary, after he fell out of a truck when he was 4-years-old.
Porter Ellett, 1st Baseman / Pitcher: "There were some rocks on the side of the road, and I hit my head on one of the rocks. It just pulled all the nerves out of my spine."
Not only can Ellett catch and field with one arm. He can hit with one arm also."
Porter Ellett, 1st Baseman / Pitcher: "I'm hitting all right. I think I'm about .400"
Lance Peterson: "He can do everything as good as anybody else."
It just takes a minute to believe what you're seeing.
Porter Ellett, 1st Baseman / Pitcher: "It used to bug me when people would stare at me, it's no big deal anymore."
He's learned people just like to see something on a baseball field they've never seen before.
Trevor Taylor, Centerfielder: "I can't even... I've tried it. I've tried flipping my mitt. It's impossible."
Porter Ellett, 1st Baseman / Pitcher: "I beat up my mitt pretty bad. I have to get a new one about every year."
And this year, he might also get a state title.
Porter Ellett, 1st Baseman / Pitcher: "We're a pretty good team."
Wayne High School plays Panguitch this Friday. If they win, the championship game is Saturday.
