SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Bankruptcy cases rose by nearly half in Utah last year.
Bankruptcy attorney Tony Jones cites medical bills, loss of employment, working hours or sales commissions for the filings.
Jones says other people are running up their credit cards to leave more cash available for paying the mortgage.
Utah Bankruptcy Court Clerk David Sime says debtors filed 9,256 bankruptcy cases in 2008, up from 6,284 the year before.
Utah filings are increasing to nearly half the level before 2005, when Congress changed the law to make escaping debt harder.
