(KSL News) -- Advocates for the mentally ill are trying to bring awareness of a problem they say society often ignores.

Juergen Korbanka, Dir., Wasatch Mental Health: "Most individuals with mental illness have similar experiences as the rest of us. And we really as a community need to embrace them, rather than isolate them."

Today people suffering from mental illness placed a flag to show each person treated for mental illness in Utah County last year. More than 5400 flags were placed, but that may be only one third of the people who need treatment for mental illness.

Those who battle the condition say asking for help is the first step.

Mary: "Maybe they should look at themselves and look into the possibility of treatment or counseling or even medication."

The goal of mental illness awareness week is to eliminate the myths and stigmas of mental disorders.
