Woods Cross might be getting a power plant to produce energy within the shadow of the Holly refinery. A group is planning to voice opposition at a meeting on Thursday.

Opponents say the Consolidated Energy plant will burn petroleum coke, which they say is linked to respiratory illness and heart disease, and spew off poisons.

"Mercury, arsenic, lead, all these things can be released into the air. Plus, carbon monoxides, nitrogen oxides," said Alison Bond, an attorney associated with Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment.

She is organizing a Thursday public hearing in Woods Cross. It will take place at Woods Cross City Hall at 6:30 p.m.

"Anybody just needs to go up on one of the benches and look out over the valley and see what kind of air pollution we have here," she said.

She says the Department of Environmental Quality tentatively approved air quality at the proposed plant.
