(KSL News) A fire forced a South Salt Lake family from its home early this morning.
Fire crews arrived near 300 East Gardner Avenue just before 6:00 to a lot of heavy smoke and to all five residents on the sidewalk watching the fire.
Brent Unutoa/ Resident: "I was sleeping and my mom woke me up. The entire basement was full of smoke. We ran to the laundry room and saw the fire. We tried to throw water on it, but it was already too far spread. We just got out of there."
The fire started behind the dryer and spread throughout the laundry room.
Fire crews say the fire was more difficult than expected to put out. Boxes full of clothes and debris helped fuel the fire.
Crews say the family won't be let back in until the carbon monoxide levels go down.
